Full Air Permeability Test

All buildings unintentionally leak air, in and out. Air tightness testing identifies the amount of leakage that occurs and offers the opportunity to minimise it. The higher the air tightness level, the less unwanted  infiltration will occur.

Poor design, substandard construction, unsuitable building methods and materials can lead to high volumes of unwanted air infiltration breaching the building’s fabric. These unwanted air pathways should be kept to a minimum.

What does air infiltration affect?

  • the durability of the building;
  • the occupant comfort;
  • the indoor air quality;
  • the occurrence of mould and;
  • the amount of energy consumed to heat or cool the building.
Air Permeability Test

This test gives you an air permeability score for your home. Your assessor can help put the results in context for you. For example, new homes built today must have an air permeability of less than 8 m³/h/m² @50pa. The assessor will need to measure the buildings volume and surface areas along with the differential pressure readings from the fan manometer to calculate the test results.

Once the results are established a certificate will be produced, registered and lodged with an accreditation body, which can then be used for any future Energy Performance Certificates (EPC’s) which can increase the EPC’s rating, and any retrofit measures you are considering.

Alternative option: thermal imaging surveys

A thermal imaging survey uses a special camera to visualise temperature variations in your home. It can reveal hidden air leaks as well as cold spots.

Thermal imaging surveys are an alternative to air tightness assessments. They can help spot poor insulation, thermal bridging, as well as unwanted air leakage. But, because thermal imaging only works in cooler weather, it isn’t an option all year round were as airtightness surveys are.

Thermal imaging surveys also don’t give you an air permeability rating if that’s what you are looking for.
